Subsequent to a correspondence between the Bishop and Crooks which took place earlier in 1862 (Cf. CIHM no. 22970). The Bishop is threatened with a suit for defamation of character if he does not publicly withdraw the charge that "General Evans and Dr. Hellmuth had CONSPIRED to obtain from him his consent to a measure which was only intended to enhance the value of General Evans' property, and to obtain a church in the city for his son-in-law [Isaac Hellmuth] ..."--(p. 6).
