- 1. Yuk-ying Book club ( ) has elected its officers for the current year. On Jan. 5, the club held a farewell banquet for its member Mr. Wong ( ), who is going to the East to further his education. 2. The owner of the Peking Restaurant ( ), Mr. Wong Wing ( ) was arrested for selling private liquor. He was fined $300. News from other cities: 1. ( ): The CBA had a celebration for the establishment of the Nanking government and for the duty handover between the old and new officers. 2. Calgary: The Chinese Public School celebrated the establishment of the Nanking government. This school reopened on Jan.6 after the new year. Mr. Lam ( ) was offered the post as a teacher, but he stated that he would teach for only 3 months, and would not accept a salary. 3. Victoria: A Chinese woman was arrested for selling opium. She was sentenced to jail for 7 years. She appealed but lost. 4. New York: the founder of On-leung Assoc. ( ), Mr. Charlie Beston ( ) passed away yesterday. The funeral will take place in Chinatown.
