December 21 P3 1) A Chinese was put to prison for 6 months in addition to $100 fine, for rape. If he was unable to pay, he would gain 3 more months of imprisonment. 2) News from Victoria on Dec. 20. The B.C. Legislative parliament held a meeting to modify the proposal that was in connection with the Chinese employ- ment rights. The proposal was modified in such a way that persons of any nationality whose characters were evil or doubtful were prohibited from employing female KBOBKRX whites. The city policy and RCMP would be respon- sible for carrying out such law. It was reported that such a law was seconded by ( ) and it was later passed through voting (20 to 5). pointed out that he was warned by the Chinese Consul General that any restrictive law might jeopardize China and Canada friendship. Mareover, he thoughtthat the original proposal was discriminatory. He emphasized that female white should be protected under the employment of both Chinese and whites. Certainly, the white employ- ers might be evil, too. 3) News from Victoria. In 1919, the B.C. legislative had passed the law that prohibited Chinese from epploying female whites.THe Consul General and the Chinese residents tried to fight it, however they failed. A few years later, MP even included Indian females to the restriction. This proposal was read twice. CBA in Victoria immediately informed Consul General Lim in Van. to take measures, and on Dec. 20, the legislature agreed to modify the proposal. The world "Chinese" was cancelled the now the law referred to employers of any nationalities. The modification was challenged by (leader of Conservative Par£y), Mp and some members of the Labour Party. But the modified proposal was finally passed. In addition, the restrictive P3 3) law that was set up in 1919 was completely abolished. 4) the Chinese Times received a notice from the Dept. of National Revenue about the new income tax rule. All merchants had to record their accounts in either English or French, otherwise they would be fined $100/day. Also, those who refused to be checked by the Income Tax officials would be fined $1000. 5) CKT Cranbrook. Names of new executives. President ; 6) Tai Tung Newspaper bonds.
