May 30 P3 1) President of the CBA was attacked for his inefficiency by 13 executives. , , & however withdrew later from the accusation. They announced that they only had a misunderstanding with and the query was cleared now. 2) defendedfon May 29) himself against the accusation by,. - fc and defense , , , etc. The accusations/were as follows: (a) was attacked for giving orders to send $1000 to without calling a meeting to make a decision. He was infact (on May 10) requested by , , , & and a number of prominent merchants (altogether 17 persons) to draw out $1000 official mone"y and send to since money was of urgent need at that moment. They agreed to raise funds to pay back the money later. With the approval of the vice president ( ) and authorized the sending out of $1000 official money to stressed that he was surprised to see that he was being attacked for doing this and that was one of the per- secutors, (b) was attacked for opening an account in the Bank of Commerce for keeping the official money of 1923 instead of keeping it in the Royal Bank (the previsou executives used to deposit money in the Royal Bank). He defended by saying tha the account for the previous year was not balanced and thus he wanted to keep the money unmoved in Royal Bank so that clarification could be made at a later date. P3 2) (c) was attacked for letting , who had already resigned his post in the previous year work again as the inspector of the public hospital. He defended that had agreed to resume the office and that his resignation in the previous year would not interfere with their present work. (d) was attacked for asking a Canadian to write a letter of protest against the reverend ( )"s denunciation of the Chinese instead of letting the social convenor ( ) do it. He defended that was not used to writing such letters, and thus he asked for help from a Canadian. Besides, was only a social convenor and not a secretary, his signature was not required in the letter. (e) In a previous meeting, was appointed to collect exit fee on May 3. After that, another person would be appointed to do the job. However, due to certain matters, had no time to call for a meeting to appoint another exit fee collector, he thus personally appointed to collect the fee on May 17 and May 20. If refused, he would ask to do it. The case would be discussed in the next meeting. stressed that he took no bias in appointing the exit fee collector. P3 3) A Chinese ( ) drug criminal had been imprisoned for a year and was to be deported after his release. His lawyer tried to defend him from deportation by pointing out that his crime was committed before the law that demanded deportation of all foreign drug criminals was enforced. The judge, however, argued back that the trial took place after the enforcement of that law and thus he had to be deported. The judge even denied his previous written approval of releasing the criminal. The lawyer still tried to help the criminal by saying that the punishment was too harsh because he only was keeping drugs but not selling. The judge replied that there was no dif- ference between the two and that punishment should be abeolute. 4) An association to protest against the restrictive immigration law was set up in on May 27. Executives were elected; each Chinese had to donate $1 to support the protest.
