Description
June 10, 1922 (Saturday) P.3 (1) News from Victoria. There was the rumor that 300 Chinese were employed in growing fruits. Many people were aroused at this and they protested that the unemployed whites could replace the Chinese workers. The city council even forced the fruit growers to employ white workers. The president of the Fruit Growers' Association pointed out that there were altogether only 35 Chinese workers and the experienced whites were usually chosen first. The Chinese were employed because they were reliant and hardworking. However for the past 2 years the majority of the farmers preferred white workers to the Chinese ones. (2) Several Chinese were arrested for storing drugs and wines.
