May 12 P.2 1) An article on the Van. Sun - a white import and export merchant stated that it was a prejudice to derogate eggs from China because they were as good as those in any place. 2) A whiteman wrote to the Sun and stated that E. Asians (workers) would be fired. Chinese stores or restaurants in busy areas should be closed down too. (May 23 P.3 - a Chinese defended the restaurant owners by writing a counter article.) 3) A Chinese was fined $400 for possession of evil drugs. 4) CKT AND Dart Coon H.Q. of Vic. - gave a farewell party to , the president of Dart Coon Club in Van. A banquet was held at Dart Coon, where the Central Public Relation ( ) was also presented. P.3 4)Exclusion Ottawa: the House of Commons held a discussion in which amendments for immigration law were drafted. 1st amendment Re: Chinese merchants. Or- iginally Chinese merchants who carried licenses issued by the Chinese govt. as well as identity issued by the British Embassy were allowed to gain entry without payment of head tax. Now, the amendment required all new coming merchants to give evidence as merchants. Licenses issued by the Chinese government would mean nothing. 2nd amendment: those Chinese newcomers who were not allowed to gain entry had to be treated equally with immigrants of other nationalities. Those who gained entry, were allowed to go back to China for 1 year and returned to Canada without tax payment. 5)CKT Reading Room Van. - the president thanked the CKT and Dart Coon Club of subsidizing his ship fare back to China and also the farewell parties. 6)CKT H.Q. - helped the association in Regina to collect sharemoney.
