April 28 P.2 1) The Canadian Legion ( ) held a meeting at City Hall. Many organizations sent representatives there. The most attractive debate was the drug issue. It was hoped that the City Council would allow the association to sell pins each day to collect funds for the anti-drug committee. A further meeting^was scheduled on May 11 with the City Council to establish an anti-drug committee called the White Cross. They even drafted amendments in order to increase punishment for drug offenders, e.g. if foreigners committed the crime deportation was essential. 2) CPS - in Van. caught fire and most of the sporting equipment was burnt. 3) Local Improvement Cttee - flyers were distributed to various Chinese organizations to send 3 types of personnel to administer the Local Improvement Cttee (1) speech makers (2) investigators (3) advisors ( ). e.g. Chinese Times, Dart Coon, Lee Ling Gee Tong, , etc. had already sent in their names. 4) A Chinese put in prison for 1 year for selling $1 worth of cocaine. 5) 30 Chinese were arrested for gambling. The head was bailed out at $100 and the other at $25. 6) Asian Queen (CPOS) the liner was travelling to the Orient, onboard were over 1000 passengers. It was reported that many Chinese were returning to China due to the depression in Canada. 7) A minister criticized the proposals of setting up liquor stores in Chinatown, because that would endanger the life style of the Indians. 8) Fund raising Assoc. for famine relief - Viet. $20,000 (Chinese $) was remitted td Shanghai for famine relief. 9) Fund raising through bazaar - Victoria news: there were leftovers from the bazaar held previously. Those remaining goods would be on sale on May 1 at CKT Reading Rm. 10) Exclusion: Ottawa news: , an MP brought up the issue of immigration of E. Asians in the parliament on April 26. He suggested to exclude E. Asians, the residents in B.C. demanded the exclusion of Chinese because in the past 5 years, most of the fertile soil in B.C. was taken by E. Asians.
