February 17 p.2-3 1) Fund raising for famine relief through a bazaar: people were generous in donating money and goods e.g. Sherman Hotel donated $482.50, i.e. room payment collected through a month, restaurants were willing to donated money profited through the lunch hour business, and a barber even donated one of his day's earnings. p.3 2) The Veteran Association held a meeting and demanded that the city pass a regef ulation that required all eggs from China have a label. 3) A few custom officers were fired due to inefficient performance which led to the import of liquor and illegal drugs into Canada. Recently, when Japanese Queen arrived in Vancouver, the customs were more thorough in searching for illegal products. Eventually a few cases of liquor and 20 packages of illegal drugs were discocerede 4) Fund raising for the draught Victoria news - the Chinese Women Fund raising team (leader was Mrs. Seto ) was trying to raise funds within and outside of the Chinese community. They went from door to door. 5) Fund raising association to relieve famine in N- China was established in Vic. in Jan. ( ) had sent agents out to raise funds. The Man Sing Reading Room also assited in the fund drive by putting on a drama performance on Feb. 19 and 20th. 6) H oysun Assoc. H.Q. - received donations from H.K. merchants who were once residents of Canada; e.g. , , etc. donated each $1000; and others $500, $250, $200, $100, and $50. 7) A white merchant who had stayed in Shanghai was in Vancouver and he talked about the degeneration of commercial development in China due to the draught situation. 8) Hoysun announced the names of donors who sent in the deposits.
