- January 31 p.3 1) Hoysun Assoc Vic. - names of initiators for establishment of secondary school 2) Recently the gambling places in Chinatown were under severe surveillance by police. All gamblers were now required to pay $50 bail instead of $25. As a result, illegal gambling had decreased, and many gambling places were shut down. Police had searched a gambling joint on Jan. 29 and only 9 gamblers were arrested. 3) News from Halifax - about 3000 Chinese workers were on board the steamer . Due to the influenza, the ship was detained. It was reported that a Chinese later died from pneumonia and 5 others were sent to hospitals.
