January 30 P.2-3 1) Hawkers business: The license dept. announced that until Jan. 29, there were 126 Chinese license applicants. It was estimated there were 200 hawkers in Van. It was said that there was a whiteman who applied for a hawker license and had sold it to a Chinese claiming that he could not compete with the Chinese hawkers. He tried to go around New Westminster collecting cheapest goods so as to make a good profit. However, when he compared his price with the Chinese, he discovered that they sold their goods in lower prices, sometimes even lower than warehouse prices. It was also reported that there a few returned soldiers who went to apply p.2-3 1) for hawker's license among whom one had an automobile to carry the goods for door-to-door sales, p.3 2) Hoysun Assoc.Vic. - Chinese were enthusiastic in donating for secondary school to be established in Hoysun district. The first era donation was over $8200. The 2nd term donation was over $2100. had donated $500. 3) . thanked Consul General Yip who had claimed back the head tax of his son who was refused entry. 4) CKT Hammond thanked those who donated for association. $36 from CKT Nelson; $58 from CKT London, Ontario.
