- May 12, Monday P.3 1. News from Victoria: The English newspaper in Victoria reported that the City Council had held a meeting on May 5 when Alderman suggested segregating the Chinese stores because Chinese shop keepers usually violated the city law and opened their stores during after-hours. The white merchant association also asked for help to protect the business of the small scale merchants. The Alderman also seconded the law that prohibited Chinese from employing female whites. He finally added that Chinese should also be segregated from the better residential area. There was however a letter sent to the newspaper in Victoria praising the behavior of the Chinese merchants. The writer stressed that the white merchants should model their behavior after the Chinese merchants. 2. The C.K.T.
