April 29. Wednesday P.2 1. The Canadian government had tried to check excessive Chinese entry by allowing only students who were under 16 years old and were able to pay the $500 head tax to enter. It was reported after the law was made effective, the newcomers were being questioned in detail at the immigration office. There were already quite a few being refused to land and also there were many being detained in the office. 2. The revival of the Chee Kong Tong in Toronto. 3. The government Industrial Inspection Team held a meeting to discuss the employment rate. An owner of a sawmill company asserted that he hired 71 whites and 158 East Asian workers and everyone was satisfied. He added that the Chinese always did the jobs which the whites did not care to do, so the Chinese did not exploit the job opportunities of the whites. However, there were other speakers who suggested dismissal of the Chinese workers and replaced . them with the whites. 4. 2 representatives, one was from Vancouver; the other from Victoria, would be sent by the C.K. headquarter to raise funds. 5. The C.B.A. from Winnipeg received a letter from plead for military fund raising. A letter sent by promotion of education and realty.
