- Description
- March 11, Tuesday P.3 1. There were about 150 shingle factories in Canada which employed more than 2,000 Chinese workers. However, the Chinese workers did not have much co-operation and communication which eventually led to the harassment by the management. After the managers had tried to reduce the salaries of the workers, the Chinese had set up a Chinese shingle workers association for more efficient communication among the workers. A meeting had already been held on March 9 to prepare the establishment of the association. P.3 2. Alderman announced on Feb. 8 during the City Council meeting that the Canadian government had already prohibited East Asians from gaining entry into Canada. Ambassador Yip also sent a protest to the City Council protesting against Chinese segregation proposed by Alderman 3. B.C. United Sawmill And Shingle Association ( ) had proposed having a school to train the returning soldiers as sawmill and shingle workers. Their intention was to replace the presently employed East Asian workers with the returning soldiers. They intended teaching 12 students each month initially and then increase the numbers of students when required.
