March 5, Wednesday P.3 1. The Chee Kong headquarters'representatives were in Nelson where they raised more than $300 for the headquarters. 2. News that the Toronto City Council had passed a law which prohibited the issuing of licenses to business men who were not of Canadian subjects. On Feb. 28, Ambassador Yeung had succeeded to persuade the city council just to apply the law to the enemy countrymen. Since China was one of the allies, all Chinese business men were given business licenses. ( + March 8, P.3). P.2-3 3. There was a proposal to set up a school to teach the returning soldiers the shingle technique (the skill to cut and pack shingles), so that the soldiers could replace the East Asian workers when they returned to Canada. P.3 The Chinese workers in the shingles industry announced on March 5 that they had gone on strike on March 1st to protest against the reduction of their salaries. However, there were foremen who were tempting the workers back to work. It was hoped that the workers in shingle factories would support the strike and fight for their rights.
