- October 23 3 1) The police were trying to sweep out the gambling joints in Chinatown. Many gamblers were arrested, the heads were fined $100 and the gamblers, $10. The police also warned the Chinese stores that they were not allowed to gather there due to hygenic regulations. However, 9 Chinese gamblers were arrested on Oct. 21. The heads were fined $150 and the others $25. The judge promised to administer more severe punishment in future offences. 2) The Ghee Duck H.Q. in Victoria announced on Oct. 12 that the association was in debt, and they had decided to set up a Sam Duck Pak Tze Hui to raise funds ($5 per share). There were already many members participating but it was hoped that more would give help.
