- Description
- September 30 2 1) Ambassador Yeung sent a letter to the CBA (Van.) stating that all Chinese, whether they were citizens or not, were exempt from enlistment. 2) CBA (Vic) announced on Sept. 28 that all Chinese should raise flags to celebrate Confucius Day on Sept. 30. 3) In Montreal, a group of Chinese crewmen appealed to the CBA and Ambassador Yeung that they were being mistreated on a steamer. Ambassador Yeung went onboard to investigate the case on Sept. 7. He discovered that the captain had beaten the crewmen, but due to the good friendship between England and China, he did not sue the captain. Instead he went onbaard with a lawyer and sme Chinese merchants to give a trial on the case. As a result, the captain was convicted and he had promised to give better treatment to his crew members.
