- June 5 P.I 1) An article on the law that regulated the admission of Chinese students into Canada: 1906: there was a special law to have all Chinese immigrants to pay $500 tax; however, if anyone could prove himself to be a student, he could be exempt. 1907: a new law was set up: even students had to pay $500 head tax. After he had been in school for one year, and the school authority could prove him to be a genuine student, he would get his tax back. 1917: Any student upon arrival would be exempt from the tax if he could produce his transcript. A letter from the principal and from the Shanghai Embassy, or even a recommendation from the Youth Association. The Dean of the University of Toronto ( ) had once said that Chinese students were welcome to study in the University because they could absorb the western classics as well as bringing to the west, those of the East. At Toronto University, the 5 classics and 4 books of China were introduced into the academic courses.
