May 14 P.3 1) Ambassador Yeung announced on May 1 that all foreign workers were prohibited gaining entry into Canada. The transit Chinese who were in Canada were also prohibited to pay the head tax for permanent residence. 2) News from Montreal: there was a general meeting in the Chinese Chamber of Com- merce, in Montreal to discuss the problem of the transit Chinese. Quite a lot of transit-Chinese who were going to Jamaica, Mexico and various places pre- ferred to stay in Canada by paying $500 head tax. However, the Chief Immigration office announced recently that all transit Chinese were prohibited to pay ftiead tax and gain permanent residence. The newly arrived Chinese in Montreal were thus detained at the CPR station. Ambassador Yeung was asked to help and appeal to the immigration officer. For- tunately, the immigration office allowed the workers in the 2 recent shipments to land on Canada. Afterward, no Chinese workers would be allowed in.
