January 3 P2-3 1) An article for the new year celebration by a member of the Chee Kong Tong: S~: the effect of the reading room; the effect of the f~S J (Dart Coon Club); the effect of the newspaper. V,*?- P.7 2) The Chee Kong Tong had held a meeting on Dec. 29th to welcome the new members. and \%%%&, &fjjgmade speeches on the Freemasons as a secret society and glorified the association for its recognition as an official association. It was reported that many participated in the meeting, and within the 2 recent months, there were more than ICO new members registered at the association. 3) Chee Kong Ton, and the Chinese Republic Party had held a fare- well party for Ambassador Lira on Dec. 28th. The new Ambassador was invited to the banquet. Ambassador Lim made speeches on his work during his 6 years of service. Ambassador , , , were also invited to make speeches. 4) 45 Chinese were arrested in 27 Fender Street for gambling. The head was fined $25 and the other $10. 5) The CBA in Victoria announced on Dec. 25th that Ambassador Yeung had reserved 1200 seats for the returning Chinese in 2 shipments 6) There were altogether 22 Chee Kong Tongs in West Coast of Canada. P.13 7) The historical background of the Freemason and the reasons why the 5-ancestors temple was built. ( was a commander in chief who wanted to revive the Ming Dynasty and to chase out the Ching government, however, he was killed on September 9th (Chinese calendar) and he became the founder of the Freemason association. After the death of , the Ming heros became scattered, and there were 5-ancestor temples set up and a rebellion organized against the Ching government. After the Tai Ping rebellion, many Ming's heros had to find refuge. Some went abroad and set up the Chee Kong Tongs which became the most useful fund raising agents abroad for the 1911 rebellion. The 5-ancestor temples in Canton and Shanghai were established to glorify and remember the heros who sacrified themselves for the Republic of China. 8) A sketch of the 5 ancestor temple which occupied about 30 acres of land.
