January 28th, Friday P.3 (1) The Vancouver Chinese Salvation and Welfare Committee was criticized for its impracticality. They were criticized for 2 reasons: 1. It was difficult for the poor and needy one to get good references from an organization or company. 2. It was imposible for them to cook rice due to the lack of equipment. So it was suggested that the committee should provide free meals instead of rice distribution. (2) News from Winnipeg: There were members of the revolutionary group ( " in Winnipeg who went to persuade various Chinese stores to re-open their illegal business ( ^% f J ). They asserted that if they re-opened the gambling business, they had to give 4 portions of payment to the revolutionary group ( ) each week. Each portion should consist of $10, so 4 portions should be $40; and there were 7 stores in the Chinatown of Winnipeg, so the revolutionary party could get $280 each week from the illegal business. The stores in Chinatown obviously refused the revolutionary party and the revolutionary party consequently revenged by informing the police that the stores had illegal storage of liquor. Consequently the wine and liquor of the stores were all confiscated by the police.
