January 30th, Saturday P. 3 (1) Amoassador Lim made another announcement on February 29th stating that he had sent representatives to stay in Victoria to report daily the development of the case. He was informed that the case would not be discussed in the Parliament until the 5th of February. This meant that the Chinese would have more time to prepare for the appeal. The deadline for returning the petition would be extended to the 4th of February for more signatures. P. 3 (2) It was recorded that the majority Chinese population was still indifferent to Ambassador Lit. fs counter-action. There was no response from the so called associations or commercial organiza- tions. Only three petitions were asked by Minister 'VE- £ '^__ > --*- "*£2*C_ r^L "v*'^--. and -6G6V\hfvvxu . V* <$x_. was able to collect about 50 signatures. P. 3 (3) Due to the effect of the European War, many Chinese became unem- ployed. They had neither fund to go oack to China nor money to support themselves. Fortunately, some Chinese felt sympathetic towards them and tried to start welfare for them. For example, "%. ^R; ^_J took the initiative to raise funds for then. He went from door to door and asked for donations. In the first fund driving activity, he was able to raise $3^5.60, 260 sacks <f rice, and many other groceries too. Starting on 28th January,free meals were provided for the needy in the C.B.A. building.
