In 1833 the Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada merged with the Wesleyans of Eastern Canada to form the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada. In 1834, a portion of the adherents of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada decided they wished to remain connected to the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States and reorganised and kept the name Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada.
