Caption title.
Publisher and editor: Jan. 1, 1851-Apr. 3, 1852, Henry Bibb; June 17, 1852-Dec. 16, 1852, Henry Bibb and J.T. Holly.
"Despite Mary Bibb not being listed as a co-editor, she actively contributed to the paper. Mary Bibb had written several articles, connected with a network of abolitionists in northern states within the U.S to obtain more subscribers all while also taking on the role as an editor and publisher when her husband was away." Cf. Wikipedia, "Voice of the Fugitive", viewed October 24, 2025.
"In January 1853, the newspaper added “Canadian Independent” to its name, increased in size, and became a weekly publication. This appears to be despite the constant financial struggles to keep it afloat. On the night of October 9th, 1853, the offices of the newspaper were burned to the ground. However, by November the Voice was publishing once again. “We observe that it has come forth from the fire, phoenix-like, and vastly improved.” (Globe, 1853: November 4th, page 2). Henry Bibb continued to publish Voice of the Fugitive until his untimely death on August 1st, 1854." Cf. https://vitacollections.ca/multiculturalontario/476/exhibit/9.
