The University of Victoria has contributed metadata from their collection of Colonial Despatches of Vancouver Island and British Columbia (1846-1871) to the Canadiana Discovery Portal.
The despatches are essentially government communications between the British government and authorities in the new colony of British Columbia. They deal with a large variety of subjects including relations with the Native population, military movements, tactics and strategies, financial issues, promotion of immigration, relations with the US and many day to day matters.
These despatches provide a fascinating insight into the operation of colonial activities and relations.
217 early B.C maps can also be accessed through the U Vic site.
