Simcoe
to Dorchester, March 9th, 1795
Lord Dorchester,
formerly Sir Guy Carleton, was governor of Upper and Lower Canada
(before 1791, Québec) from 1766 to 1770, 1774 to 1778 and
1786 till 1795. Sir
John Graves Simcoe was lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada
from 1791 to 1796.
Document Summary:
This letter discusses how to deal with Aboriginal peoples ("Indians")
in Upper Canada. Simcoe recommends an annual meeting of chiefs
with lieutenant-governor, Council and other officers "civil
and military." He argued that the lieutenant-governor and
the Legislative
Council should have control over Indians.
