Canadiana Online Launch
March 2, 2017
Canadiana is pleased to announce the launch of Canadiana Online, a new service providing unified full-text search and access to three major collections of digitized Canadian documentary heritage.
Canadiana Online consists of Monographs, Government Publications, and Serials – Periodicals, Annuals and Newspapers. These collections bring together all the content in the existing Early Canadiana Online (ECO), the entire microfiche corpus of the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM, now Canadiana), plus millions of pages of additional content never before published by Canadiana.
Altogether, Canadiana Online includes 32 million pages of content, or about 6 times the size of the ECO collection. About 70% of this content is online now, with the remainder to be added over the course of 2017. Canadiana Online is the only electronic resource that offers full-text searching across the entire corpus of CIHM fiche.
Canadiana is a not-for-profit charity dedicated to preserving and improving online access to Canada’s documentary heritage and knowledge resources. Canadiana provides access to more than 70 million pages of digitized historical documents through Early Canadiana Online (http://eco.canadiana.ca), Héritage (http://heritage.canadiana.ca) and now Canadiana Online (http://online.canadiana.ca). These collections have been developed as a result of working with libraries, archives and other memory institutions over a period of almost 40 years.
Canadiana is funded by subscription fees. Revenues from subscriptions are used to cover the ongoing costs of maintaining Canadiana’s Trustworthy Digital Repository preservation network; providing access to its collections; building and improving tools for discovery and access; enhancing metadata; and digitizing new content.
Canadiana Online is now available for institutional subscriptions, with individual subscription access coming soon. Current ECO subscribers are eligible to upgrade their ECO subscriptions to include Canadiana Online. A complete bundle of all Canadiana content, including ECO, Canadiana Online and Héritage, is available at a substantial discount. Public libraries are eligible for a 50% discount for their first year.
